# Today is Excel Date 42000

This is day 42000 in the Excel calendar, so maybe we’ll get the “Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything” – a thousand times!

### Keyboard Shortcuts

I noticed today’s serial number this morning, while working on my daily reports.

First, I entered today’s date, by typing the keyboard shortcut – **Ctrl + ;**

In the next row, I used a different shortcut, to copy from the row above –** Ctrl + ‘**

That showed the date as a serial number, which is how Excel stores dates.

### When is 43000?

As soon as I pressed Enter, the cell showed the date in the Short Date format, which is how that column is formatted.

Finally, a little arithmetic in the next row showed me when it will be 43000 – September 22, 2017. See you then!

Hi Deb,

You know that you are an Excel person when your response to “What’s the date today?” is “It’s 42000”.

BTW…Happy 42005!

Cheers,

Kevin

@Kevin, thanks and Happy New Year to you too!

Hi Debra,

Hi!!Debra!!

Happy New Year!!

Would like to share one more formula for quick success.

If 43000 in A4, then=Date(Year(A4),Month(A4),Day(A4))..enter.the answer is.22/09/2017..

@Ramki, Thanks for sharing your formula, and Happy New Year to you too!

Debra,

Your solution works, but isn’t it a little convoluted? Why work with date addition? Just enter 43000 in a cell and format the cell as a date.

I’m a BIG fan of yours and your site; I just think that this time we bypassed the easy solution in favor of a straightforward one. I recognize the syndrome, because I’ve done it LOTS of times!

Thanks again for all your help, all the time.

@George, you’re right, I could have just typed 43000 in that cell, and skipped the formula! I vaguely remember wanting to show a bit of date arithmetic, so that must be why I did it.

However, I had pneumonia when I posted this article, so maybe the medication was clouding my thinking. ;-)

Oops. Should have said “bypassed the easy solution in favor of a more complicated one”. THAT is what I’ve done many, many times.

¡Excellent! ¡Beautiful!

Greetings from the future! I was just working with a system which kept saying that the date was ‘43000’, so I had to google it… And here I am, exactly!

Wow! What a coincidence — thanks for letting me know, and Happy Day 43000.
