Happy New Year, Deb.
Not sure I follow the problem with csv file.
Just created a file in Excel and saved as id.csv
No problems saving or reopening.
Also tried making id the first entry on sheet and saved, still no problem.
What do you need to do to re-create the problem?

I too can't replicate the "id" CSV problem (using Excel 2003).
I like the ...
"user was complaining that excel 2007 has ‘less functionality’ than prev vers. turns out no one @ his last job knew about the office button"
... first time I encountered Excel 2007 (with a paying client looking on) it took me a few minutes to figure out that the Office button actually did something.

The first two characters in the file (ID) is how excel (and other programs) know that you're working on a SYLK file.
What the heck is that?

Thanks Dave! I've added the link to the top of the article.
Roger, Happy New Year to you too! The ID must be in capital letters for this problem to occur.
Tom, use ID instead of id and you should see the problem. I related to that Office Button comment too. It just looks like a nice decoration when you first see it.
